Reports and announcements

This first Atlas of variation for palliative and end of life care in England builds on a decade of increasing awareness about the importance of using comparative and trend data to understand aspects of the need for, and provision of, palliative and end of life care.

I wish I had known (Compassion in Dying, 30th November 2018)
This report shares what people approaching the end of their lives wished they had known prior to their diagnosis.

Together for Short Lives have identified a number of challenges which will threaten the end of life care choice commitment for children by 2020.

For surgeons and those part of a surgical team or a service provider; advice, guidance and support on end of life care.

Between a quarter and two-thirds of adults admitted to specialist palliative care units experience delirium, or acute confusion. The findings come from a mixed methods project which included a systematic review of the number of people living with delirium. The project also included interviews with nurses in Australian palliative care units to look at delirium assessment and use of screening tools. The findings highlighted that systems which formally diagnose delirium were not commonly used. Delirium guidelines made little reference to palliative care. The qualitative findings may also have relevance to the UK, though systems will differ. They suggest a need for education and training about delirium among palliative care practitioners.

The model involves reversing the traditional approach to discharge. The “Assess to discharge” approach, is “flipped” to the “discharge to assess” model.

This report examines trends in the UK health and social care workforce and the role of European nationals in it.

Reports and announcements

Hospice UK and Sue Ryder have joined together to explore access to bereavement services by engaging with people who have recently lost someone close to them.

In a shared decision-making process between the resident and a nurse at The Pines nursing home (Wandsworth), a Coordinate My Care Plan is created and then digitally shared with all urgent care services ensuring that everyone knows how, when and where to manage the resident in times of need.

MND Association have launched a new animated film about voice and message banking. Endorsed by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, the animation provides a brief overview of voice and message banking, plus where people with MND can get support to complete these.

The 2018 Hawking Annual MND Lecture, hosted at the Royal College of Nursing in November, will focus on cognitive change, which has in recent years been increasingly recognised as a feature of motor neurone disease (MND).

The Centre for Ageing Better has published a review focussing on planning for later life (age 60 and over) from mid-life (age 40-60) onwards. It characterises planning for later life as the range of activities people deliberately pursue with the aim of achieving desired outcomes in later life, including end of life care.

Understanding the circumstances associated with feeling lonely and explaining what we know works in supporting people to tackle feelings of persistent loneliness.

World Alzheimer Report 2018: The state of the art of dementia research (Alzheimer’s Disease International, September 2018)
ADI proposes that, nationally, 1% of the societal cost of dementia should be devoted to funding research in: basic science, care improvements, prevention and risk reduction, drug development and public health.

The report looks at aspects of DoLS activity, including the profile of people for whom a DoLS application was received, applications completed and their outcome, and applications not completed.

This strategy is a first step and sets out a vision of how government can support people to build stronger relationships. It calls for everyone in society to play their part in making England a more friendly and supportive place.

This is an overview of systematic reviews conducted on loneliness between 2008-2018. Unpublished grey literature published between 2008-2018 and in the form of evaluation reports is also included. We have only included findings from studies using controlled study designs and measuring loneliness as reported in the reviews.

The Royal College of Physicians has published a report aiming to offer advice and support for any doctor on holding conversations with patients much earlier after the diagnosis of a progressive or terminal condition, including frailty.
