Reports and announcements

Marie Curie Report: Emergency admissions at end of life set to sky rocket (March 2018)
Emergency admissions to hospital for people in the last year of life are a substantial and often avoidable burden on the NHS. In 2016, there were over 1.6 million emergency admissions for people in the last year of their life, amounting to around 11 million days in hospital, costing the NHS £2.5 billion. While emergency admissions for people in the last year of life are sometimes necessary, they can often be avoided entirely if adequate care in the community is provided.

The project is aims to improve patient and carer palliative healthcare by better understanding their needs and complexities.

This report brings together what is already know about older people’s experiences of bereavement along with new research centred on older people whose partners have died.

This document aims to assist practitioners, providers and health and social care commissioners create opportunities for people living with dementia to develop an Advance Care Plan (ACP).

10 recommendations for achieving organisational change.

NIHR Signal : Multi-morbidity predicted to increase in the UK over the next 20 years (March 2018)

Two-thirds of adults aged over 65 are expected to be living with multiple health conditions (multi-morbidity) by 2035. Seventeen percent would be living with four or more diseases, double the number in 2015. Two-thirds of these people would have a mental illness like dementia or depression.
