November 2018

You can receive an alert of new blog postings by entering your email address into the Follow by Email box on the right-hand side of the page here.

An alternative way to keep up-to-date is to set up journal alerts on HDAS to create your own personalised evidence updates (OpenAthens account required, register here). You can change the settings as and when your needs change - putting you in control of what you receive and when you receive it.

Princess Alice Hospice staff can email library@pah.org.uk for help and advice on how to set up alerts and/or for help accessing any articles.

Reports and announcements

This first Atlas of variation for palliative and end of life care in England builds on a decade of increasing awareness about the importance of using comparative and trend data to understand aspects of the need for, and provision of, palliative and end of life care.

I wish I had known (Compassion in Dying, 30th November 2018)
This report shares what people approaching the end of their lives wished they had known prior to their diagnosis.

Together for Short Lives have identified a number of challenges which will threaten the end of life care choice commitment for children by 2020.

For surgeons and those part of a surgical team or a service provider; advice, guidance and support on end of life care.

Between a quarter and two-thirds of adults admitted to specialist palliative care units experience delirium, or acute confusion. The findings come from a mixed methods project which included a systematic review of the number of people living with delirium. The project also included interviews with nurses in Australian palliative care units to look at delirium assessment and use of screening tools. The findings highlighted that systems which formally diagnose delirium were not commonly used. Delirium guidelines made little reference to palliative care. The qualitative findings may also have relevance to the UK, though systems will differ. They suggest a need for education and training about delirium among palliative care practitioners.

The model involves reversing the traditional approach to discharge. The “Assess to discharge” approach, is “flipped” to the “discharge to assess” model.

This report examines trends in the UK health and social care workforce and the role of European nationals in it.
